Alternative to Prescription Medications
When I say seniors, I'm referring to the generation of baby boomers. We all know baby boomers went through the ups and downs of cannabis in their younger years. Some allowed the stigma to stay with them, and some are still hippies. Ya know, every time I hear the word hippie, I think of the line in the song by the Bellamy Brothers, "He's an old hippie, and he doesn't know what to do. Should he hang on to the old; should he grab onto the new." Their generation was different. Women went from being secretaries only to career's typically reserved for males only. They went through a fierce war, and our Veterans weren't shamed when they returned home. They had Woodstock, special resistant groups, and so much more the younger generations may not understand. In their days, televisions in the household weren't as common as it was in the 90s. They got their news and advice from newspapers and doctors. They were conditioned to believe their doctors and accept all FDA approved medications even though there are side effects. It was a different time than it is today. With technology and the internet, seniors can now get their information through various media streams. There's one thing, I feel, we can all get on board with, though. That is Cannabidiol or CBD. CBD oil for Seniors isn't as taboo as it may have been 20 years ago. According to Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine, people over the age of 50 are responsible for the increase in marijuana use. Senior citizens are starting to feel the effects of prescribed pharmaceuticals and ready for something with natural results instead of toxic ones. Some reasons CBD oil may be attractive for seniors is its ability to help with chronic pain that affects joints and muscles. Research shows that CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid System, or the ECS; by blocking the body's pain responses. The World Health Organization (WHO), has also stated that CBD is "generally well tolerated with a good safety profile." Seniors are also consuming CBD oil to help with their insomnia. The older people get, the more difficult it is to stay asleep and get a night of uninterrupted rest. According to the National Sleep Foundation, it is more difficult for those over 65 to remain asleep throughout the night. While THC may seem only to contain sleeping agents; CBD oil for seniors has shown to help regulate sleep and allow for a restful night. Other symptoms senior citizens are trying to target are of cognitive nature that affects memory and balance. There was a research study done at Geneva University Hospital in Switzerland for those who have dementia. After two months of treatment with a 2:1 ratio of CBD and THC, half the seniors, weaned off their prescribed pharmaceuticals that included morphine and other antipsychotic medications. While this study was only for 10 participants, after five months of being administered CBD and THC concoction, the conclusion of this study was an eye opener, behavior problems decreased by 40%, more than half were able to wean off or reduce psychotropic medications, and constipation decreased due to eliminating opioids. Please consult with your physician before weaning off your medications. While I support replacing opioids with CBD, it is always best to do so safely. While studies have shown favorable results, please understand everyone is different, and it could take time before realizing the amount of CBD your specific ailment requires.
